Becoming an Apprentice with Greenlight Training
What does it take to become an Apprentice?
How to become a Greenlight Apprentice
Step 1
-
Greenlight has a dedicated page to help you apply for Apprenticeships here.
Additionally, we hold regular Apprenticeship Open Days throughout the year at both of our centres. The idea is that you can come along and take part in a practical demonstration of the Apprenticeship you’re interested in, as well as ask questions. It’s a fantastic way to see which trade may be best for you. Plus, you can sign up for an Apprenticeship right there at the event, and one of our team will be in touch soon afterwards to follow up. You can see when our next Open Days are by going here.
Step 2
-
A Pre-Apprenticeship Session is a 3-day assessment, and is a crucial part of our recruitment process for our candidates. It plays a key role in determining if you are ready to take on the challenge of an Apprenticeship.
The assessment is conducted on a pass/fail basis and is designed to evaluate your employability, reliability, time keeping, motivation, and passion for your chosen trade. Additionally, you will be required to complete a basic English and Maths assessment (BKSB) to identify any areas where academic support may be needed.
During the session, you will be asked to complete a series of tasks. Our team will assess your skills and strengths, as well as identify potential areas for improvement. We will also conduct a Destination Talk, which helps us better understand how we can support your journey and ensure your progression into an Apprenticeship.
While we will assist you in finding an employer, we strongly recommend that you begin searching through platforms such as Facebook pages and other employment advertising sites to increase your chances of securing an employment opportunity, which is needed to complete an Apprenticeship.
Step 3
-
As an essential part of the recruitment process, a work trial with a prospective employer will usually last for 2 weeks, and depending on the duration and individual circumstances can be paid or unpaid.
A work trial helps you determine if the employer is right for you and you a good fit for them, and allows everyone involved to get a feel for what your work as an Apprentice will entail.
Greenlight will monitor your work trial closely - this is a chance for you to prove yourself, and show the employer exactly what you can bring to the table - be it enthusiasm, existing skills, a willingness to learn and take direction, or all of these combined.
If you already have an employer interested in recruiting you, that’s great! Greenlight are very happy to vet them and make sure we’re able to work with them to deliver your Apprenticeship.
Step 4
-
Once you have completed a successful work trial, and all sides are happy, your Apprenticeship can begin!
Your Apprenticeship will last between 18 and 27 months, depending on the trade and the level.
Throughout the duration of your Apprenticeship you will attend one of our training centres for 4 days each month, in 2 blocks of 2 days each. The rest of the time you will be learning on the job with your employer!
